Jul 08, 2017 I'm trying to learn why my internal disk is so full on my iMac. I ran Daisy Disk to map my drive. Daisy Disk reports that iCloud Drive is using 55 GB of disk space.

- DaisyDisk is a disk space analyzer for Mac OS X, that gives a visual overview of your disk space in form of an interactive map. It's has a very fast scan algorithm that quickly reveals the biggest space wasters and let you remove them with simple drag and drop.
- DaisyDisk displays the contents as a color-coded sunburst diagram, resembling the petals of a daisy. The interface places the root of the hard drive at the center of this daisy, and displays a hierarchical structure of that hard drive's file system that radiates from that center.
- DaisyDisk comes in two flavors: Mac App Store and standalone edition (available from our website). The standalone edition is not sandboxed (it uses Developer ID signature instead), allows you to scan disks as administrator, delete stuck files and reveal “hidden” disk space.
- It’s not necessary to scan disks as administrator every time unless you have multiple user accounts or large folders that require administrator access permissions. It’s generally a good idea to scan disks as normal user unless scan results reveal significant amounts of hidden disk space.
The big picture
Upon launch, DaisyDisk displays the list of all volumes mounted on your Mac with your startup disk at the top:
You can easily tell which disks are running out of free space by taking a brief look at disk usage gauges. Green color means at least half of your disk is empty, red is often a clear call to action. The only number below the gauge tells you how much space is left, and pointing the mouse at it also reveals the amount of used space.
Note: the space gauge adds the purgeable space to its empty part, for consistency with macOS's Finder and Disk Utility, and also to assume that the purgeable space will be quickly reclaimed by macOS when apps request it. You can press ⌥ on the keyboard to view the gauge with the purgeable space included into the filled part.
Prior to macOS High Sierra, the space gauge includes purgeable space into the filled part by default.

Scanning
To find out what exactly takes up your disk space you need to scan the disk first.
You can scan whole disks or individual folders. In the latter case scanning takes less time due to a smaller number of files.
To scan a disk click the button next to the gauge or simply drag-and-drop the disk from Finder to DaisyDisk’s window or Dock icon. Folders can be scanned by clicking the button or by drag-and-dropping them from Finder.
The scan process usually takes from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, mostly depending on the disk type and the number of files and folders on it. Modern SSD disks get scanned within a few seconds, older rotational HDDs take around 2 minutes, network shares, virtual disks or Time Machine backups often take longer to scan.
If you frequently scan a folder, click on its icon to star it. Starred folders remain pinned to the list of disks after you restart the application.

DaisyDisk is friendly to both new and power-users, but with some extra knowledge you can make your work with the application even more productive.
Time savers
- Using keyboard shortcuts and Multi-Touch gestures can boost your productivity.
- Being a native Mac application, DaisyDisk supports drag and drop: you can drag disks or folders into the window to scan them, and drag and drop files to the Collector in order to collect them for further deletion.
- You can scan multiple disks and folders at the same time.
- Scanning as administrator at all times is counter-productive unless you have multiple user accounts on your Mac.
- Star the folders you scan often.
Deleting files
- Files in the Collector remain intact until you click .
- Once a file is deleted by DaisyDisk, it’s gone forever. The only chance to recover it is to use special software or services.
- DaisyDisk does its best to prevent accidental deletion of essential files, but be careful: double-check the list of folders before you click .
- Empty Trash beforehand: it may contain tens of gigabytes of useless stuff.
- Moving files to the Trash does not free up space; you’ll have to empty the Trash.
- Deleting files on disk images does not decrease the image’s size. You’ll have to compact it manually.

How stuff works
Daisydisk Scan As Administrator Search
- If you see a disk in Finder, you can scan it in DaisyDisk.
- Scan time depends on the number of files on that disk and disk type, not the disk’s capacity.
- Time Machine volumes and network drives usually take much more time to scan due to the huge number of files they contain and/or insufficient bandwidth of the network connection.
- The application calculates the physical file size, not logical one (except for network drives).
- File packages (bundles) appear as solid objects, just like in Finder, but you can expand them by selecting menu command, just like in Finder as well.
- DaisyDisk updates the amount of used/free space for each volume in disks overview in real time, this may be handy for monitoring.
- DaisyDisk automatically updates the disk map if you delete any files in-app, but it doesn’t track the changes you make from Finder or other software.
- Scanned snapshots may take hundreds of megabytes of your RAM, so if you’re short on RAM, at times you may want to tell DaisyDisk to

some scan results, using the menu command. - The build-in preview is powered by the Quick Look, so it also picks up any plugins you install.
- hidden space and smaller objects are virtual items and work in a different way than files or folders.
